do it yourself

When was the last time you built something with your own hands? Can you remember when you used your imagination to make something unique—something tangible?
Do you remember your old wood shop class in elementary or high school? I sure do. The minute I walked in the classroom, I was surrounded by that sweet smell of freshly cut wood. Each day I had the opportunity to conjure up great ideas for new projects, sketch them out, and then try my very best to manifest them from some blank piece of wood. And when it was all said and done, I usually ended up with some warped, piece-of-junk version of what I had initially imagined. But, it was my warped piece of junk. My newfound concoction was the greatest thing in the world, because I made it.
We all have an incredible thirst to create. We get this intoxicating high when we create something new or modify something to make it our own. You know it’s there. It’s the same thrill you get when you find yourself at the first big drop of a rollercoaster, that moment of anticipation and excitement of the unknown. It’s sitting there, impatiently, waiting for you to let it loose upon some new project. It’s addicting.
Whole online communities are built around three simple words, “Do It Yourself.” Communities made of people who could not stand to sit on the bench any longer, because they just had to make something. Websites like Instructables.com and TheMakeSite.com are outlets where people can share ideas, show videos/pictures of their projects, and inspire one another.
So, check out at least one of these sites. Kick your feet up and take a look around. Browse through tons of unique creations and “how-to’s.” Get inspired. And before you know it, you’ll be working on your own projects. You’ll be so proud of what you made, you’ll want to share your ideas too! Because, well, why wouldn’t you want to share them?! They’re awesome. . .
What are you waiting for? Go, do it yourself.
